The Parliament of India passed the Right to Information (RTI) Act in 2005. The RTI Act provides citizens the right to information against corruption, the conspiracy of officials, and abuse of power at various levels.
The RTI Online portal (rtionline.gov.in) is designed for Indian citizens to submit RTI requests/appeals, view status, and enjoy all the RTI services online under one website.
Online RTI Jammu & Kashmir
Citizens of J&K can also apply for online RTI through the RTI online portal. Once the application is submitted, the Nodal Officer of the concerning authority will receive the application. The Nodal Officer will then forward the RTI application to the concerned CPIO.

How to File RTI Online in J&K
Citizens of J&K can file RTI online by an application form for RTI available on the RTI online website. Follow the below-mentioned steps to file online RTI in JK:
- Visit the official website of RTI online (https://rtionline.gov.in/).
- You can see the submit request option in the navigation bar. Click on the ‘Submit request’ tab to file RTI online.

- The ‘Guidelines for use of RTI online Portal’ will be on your screen. After reading the guidelines carefully, check the box and click on the ‘Submit’ button.

- The online RTI request form used to file JK RTI online is on the screen. Select the relevant Ministry/Department/Apex body to file RTI and fill in all the details.
- Select whether you are a below poverty line (BPL) applicant or not.

For BPL Applicants
- If you are under BPL, you have to upload the BPL certificate. There is no fee for BPL applicants. Now, write your text for the RTI request application.
- Remember that your text for the RTI request should not exceed 3000 characters.
- In the supporting document field, upload your BPL certificate in PDF format (less than 1MB) and click the ‘Submit’ button to submit your JK RTI online application.

- After submission, you will see the below window. For future reference, note down the RTI online registration number issued to you.
- Click on the ‘Print Application’ button to take the printout of your application form for RTI.

For Non-BPL Applicants
- If you are not in the BPL category, you need to pay the RTI application fee of Rs.10. Write the text for the RTI request application in 3000 characters.
- If your text exceeds the limit, you can upload your request in PDF format in the supporting document field.
- Now enter the security code, and click on the ‘Make Payment’ button to pay the application fee.

- The online request payment form is now on the screen. Select the payment mode and gateway. Now, click on the ‘Pay’ button.

- You are directed now to the SBI Payment Gateway. Select the payment mode and complete the payment process.

- Once your payment is successful, you will see the below screen with the unique RTI online registration number issued to you.
- Remember this registration number for future reference. You can take the printout by clicking on the ‘Print Application’ button.

How to Check RTI Status Online
Following are the steps to check RTI status online:
- Visit the official website of RTI online (https://rtionline.gov.in/).
- To check the RTI status, click on the ‘View Status’ tab in the navigation bar.

- You will now see the online RTI status form. Enter your details and click on the ‘Submit’ button.

- The online RTI status form is now on the screen, which shows the status of your RTI application.

Case 1 – Additional Payment Required
- In this case, you will see the window with the additional payment section. Click on the ‘Make Payment’ link.

- You are directed now to the payment gateway. Complete your payment process.
Case 2 – Document attached while Filing RTI is not Accessible
- In this case, you will see the window showing an option to upload the document.
- Upload the document and click on the ‘Attached’ button.

Case 3 – Application Returned to Applicant
- In this case, you will see the below screen.

Case 4 – RTI Request Application Transferred to other Public Authority
- In this case, you will see the below screen, and you will not be issued any new registration number.

Case 5 – RTI Request Application Forwarded to multiple CPIOs
- In this case, you will see the below screen. Click on the ‘Click here to view details’ link.

- You can see the details and the registration number allotted for different CPIOs.
