Casinos began to proliferate throughout the United States in the 1970s, as state governments amended their gambling laws to permit them. Initially, most of these new casinos were in Nevada, but the popularity of gambling helped them draw visitors from across the country and abroad. In the 1980s, more casinos were opened on Native American reservations that were not subject to state antigambling laws and in cities like Atlantic City.
