What Is a Slot?

The slot is a position on a defensive backfield that covers the third receiver in an offense. Slot receivers often run precise routes, and the slot corner must be well conditioned to cover them. In addition, slot corners must be able to play press coverage as well as off-man. This makes the position challenging for even the most talented players.

A slot is a dynamic container that either waits for content (passive) or calls for it using an action or targeter. Slots and renderers work together to deliver content to pages; slots are a part of the CMS repository, while renderers specify how that content is presented on the page.

In a slot machine, a player inserts cash or, in ticket-in, ticket-out machines, a paper ticket with a barcode into a designated opening on the machine. The machine then activates reels that spin and stop to rearrange symbols on the screen. When a winning combination is displayed, the machine pays out credits according to its pay table. Many slot machines also have a credit meter, which displays the number of credits the player has won.

A slot is an area or position in a group or arrangement, especially of persons or things: a time slot on a television schedule; the job, office, or duty assigned to a particular person: He has the slot as chief copy editor. Also: a narrow notch or opening, as in the primaries of some birds, which during flight help to maintain a smooth flow of air over the wings.
